David and Susan Flowers were raised in the north of England and
taught school near Manchester where the local population equalled
that of the whole of Alberta. They came to Schuler, Alberta
in 1966 after responding to an ad in The Times Educational
Supplement. Here we would like to share with you their
story through an article that first appeared in Legacy
Magazine. The article recounts their
arrival and years in Schuler, where they became, in their own
words, "Canadianized."
From CKUA Radio Network's Heritage Trails series, Cheryl
Croucher speaks with historian David Leonard about the establishment of the Barr Colony
at present-day Lloydminster.
In Part 1, hear how the Canadian government launched an aggressive campaign to populate the prairies with British
sympathizers.
In Part 2, find out how George Lloyd and Isaac Barr recruited almost 2000 British
immigrants to settle the area near present-day Lloydminster.
