Beginning in the early 1970s, Sister Nancy LeClaire, a Roman
Catholic religious sister of Cree ancestry, found that Cree
children were not retaining their language. With the help of
a
three-ring binder and an incredible dedication to her cause, she began her
monumental task by writing down Cree words she knew and used
every day. Here we would like to share Sister LeClaire's
story with you through an article that first appeared in Legacy
Magazineread about Sister Nancy's work and the making of The Alberta
Elder's Cree Dictionary.
