Pilots and Mechanics

Wilfrid Reid "Wop" May of EdmontonAlberta had made a great contribution to the First World War, as many men enlisted to serve in all areas of the armed services. There were many well-known fighter pilots like Captain Wilfrid Reid (Wop) May of Edmonton, Roy Brown, also of Edmonton, Donald MacLaren of Calgary and Keg River, Fred McCall of Calgary, and George Gorman.

Other Albertans distinguished themselves in other areas of the aviation field, areas such as aircraft repair and maintenance. Though such roles did not carry quite the same mystique and public recognition as that of the pilots', they were critical to the success of the war effort.

All of these men returned to Alberta and made a contribution to the development of a civil aviation industry. These early efforts were the foundation of the aviation industry we enjoy today.
