A New Airfield

Punch Dickens tells how the Edmonton Municipal Airport was born. He, Wop May, Cy Becker and a few other bush pilots, persuaded the Edmonton City Council to give them $600 to cut down some of the trees and bushes on some pasture land in north Edmonton. With these funds they were able to clear two runways. The City of Edmonton applied for a license and the Edmonton airport became the first municipally owned airfield in Canada. “Punch” and another pilot flew two ski planes into the airport in May, they were greeted by about thirty or forty people; that was the official opening of the Edmonton Municipal Airport.
