The Curtiss JN 4 was an aircraft
much improved in design from the Curtiss JN 3 as a result of
recommendations from the Royal Flying Corps (RFC). Most air
training that was carried out in Canada and then later, by the
United States Air Service, was completed on the JN 4 Canadian
aircraft that was built in Toronto.
When the United States requested that the RFC travel to Texas
in the winter of 1917 to 1918 to train Americans who were
establishing their own air force, the JN 4 was used.
As training continued in Canada, the JN 4 was the first
aircraft to be fitted with skis and flown in winter conditions
for training.
