Alberta Aviation Museum Tour

J. Earle Young and Alf Lauder

The fervour for flight was widespread in Alberta in the early 1900s, and inspired a broad age-range of people.

Two youthful Calgarian experimenters, J. Earle Young (12-years-old), and Alf Lauder (15-years-old), developed and endeavoured to fly a motorized kite in 1909.

The young men attached a single cylinder motorcycle engine to their kite and attempted to launch it from the Bowness Trail. Although this attempt failed, Young and Lauder’s kite eventually achieved flight when it was later towed from the back of a Buick.
