The Wellington Bomber Incident

Vera recalls an incident in which she arrived at a location to pick up a “Wimpy” Wellington bomber for delivery to another airbase. The officers and male pilots were commenting to her that they did not think the plane was airworthy as it had some mechanical problems, in particular the radio was not working. She told them that they, the female delivery polits, believes that a plane was airworthy as long as the engine sounded fine. She delivered the plane, but a few months later she overheard some of the same officers commenting that they should have told “that woman pilot” that one of the struts on the plane was cracked and the wing could have fallen off at any time.
