There were many pipeline construction projects going on in the north. Northern Airways had contacts to transport people and supplies to these construction sites. They also had the contract to deliver the mail to remote communities. These pipelines were essential to the United States, so the US government gave Northern Airways a Fairchild 71 and two Traveller aircraft to aid them in their work. The Canadian transportation officials were not impressed, as the planes were still registered as American owned aircraft, and they forbade the company from using the planes to deliver the mail. These planes, and the men that flew them, did a lot of work in all kinds of conditions.
