Dr. Jacqueline Shan & Dr. Peter Pang

Dr. Jacqueline ShanAn ancient Asian herbal medicinal ingredient has been given new life in Alberta. Through CV Technologies, an Edmonton biotech company founded in 1992 by Dr. Jacqueline Shan, the ginseng-based Cold-fX has been clinically proven to battle cold and flu viruses.

In 2002, a U.S. FDA Phase II clinical trial showed that Cold-fX reduced the incidence of colds and flu by 89 percent. CV Technologies was the first natural health company in the world to successfully complete such a trial.

The product was co-invented by Dr. Jacqueline Shan, who in 1992 received a PhD with distinction in Physiology from the University of Alberta, and a Doctor of Science (DSc) in Pharmacology from Peking Union Medical College in 1993. Her co-inventor, the Yale-trained pharmacologist Dr. Peter Pang, was the Chair of Physiology at the University of Alberta.

"Coming from China, both Dr. Pang and I had grown up with the idea that certain natural products offered certain health benefits," she wrote in "The Courage to Believe in Yourself", an essay published in Cool Companies 2005. "The advantage to ginseng was that it offered active natural compounds that could be targeted at certain parts of the therapeutic system."

The product boosts the body’s immune system and enables it to fight off cold and flu viruses.

Since its introduction in 2003, Cold-fX, the product has undergone six clinical trials, two of which have used high-performance athletes as test subjects. Further studies with Edmonton Capital Health and the University of Alberta targeted an additional 750 people.

In 2004, the company launched another ginseng-based product called Remember-fX, which also has been clinically proven to enhance memory and mental alertness.

Dr. Peter Pang died in a traffic accident in China on 9 May 2005.
