NoNuts Golden Peabutter
This alternative spread to peanut butter has been called a godsend to those with nut allergies
and is nut, transfat, cholesterol, salt and gluten free. NoNuts Golden Peabutter is made from dry brown peas,
canola oil, icing sugar and monoglyceride from rapeseed and cottonseed oils.
The texture is slightly granular, but the spread has the flavour of a sweetened peanut butter,
and may be used in baking. At 93 calories per tablespoon, it is equal to sweetened peanut butter. It is also a
kosher product.
Available since 2002, the product has been the recipient of several food and marketing
awardsincluding three from the Canadian Council of Grocery Distributors plus the Alberta Agriculture Growing
Innovation Award and the Agriculture Canada Award of Excellence for Innovation in Agriculture and Agri Food.
It is available across Canada, with interest being shown from the United States. Torontos
Hospital for Sick Children was an early customer, owing to the spreads nut-free assurance, and that of the
nut-free production environment. As Joe St. Denis explains sales in the U.S. can be high because "more than
three million Americans are allergic to peanuts." The side effects of severe peanut allergy can be death,
due to anaphylactic shock causing the throat to swell and close the airway.
