[57] A dual-bed catalytic filter especially adapted for use with an internal combustion engine includes catalytic agents for the reduction of nitrogen oxides, carbon monoxide and unburned hydrocarbons from the engine's exhaust. The main constituent of the agent for reducing nitrogen oxides is "Monel" metal whereas a combination of cupric oxide and manganese dioxide is effective for reducing the remaining toxic substances. Each bed is removably contained in the filter which also acts as a muffler. In one form the converter consists of a housing, inlet means for passage of exhaust gases from said engine into said housing and outlet means for passage of exhaust gases from said housing, a plurality of parallel mesh screens fixedly located in said housing, adjacent screens being in face to face contact under pressure such that said gases passing from said inlet means to said outlet means pass through said screens, some of such screens being formed from copper-nickel-cobalt alloys containing a major amount of copper as catalytic agent for reducing oxides of nitrogen, and some of said screens being formed of stainless steel as catalytic agents for reducing the oxides of nitrogen and as supports for said screens formed of said catalytic copper-nickel-cobalt metal. The converter may further include some screens formed from brass or from copper.
