Sustainable Development

Sustainable Development ObjectivesSustainable development is defined as "development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs". Sustainable development thinks about the future while making decisions for the present. The core of sustainable development is striking a balance of political, economic, social, health and cultural needs.

Canada enjoys an incredibly high quality of life, the maintenance of which requires clean water, clean air and protection from natural disasters, such as tornadoes. Alongside this, quality of life relies on a strong economy that depends on natural resources from agriculture, mining, energy and fisheries. All of these industries can have a serious impact on the environment and diminish the quality of life. The key to sustainable development, therefore, is a balance between the environment and industry to create a well-managed society for today and tomorrow.
