Provincial Policy in Agriculture

AARI was created through the Alberta Science and Research Authority Act and funds a wide variety of projects each year that advance Alberta’s position as a global figure in agricultural research. The policy of AARI is to increase funding to Alberta's food and agriculture industry, with particular emphasis on life sciences.

AARI released their Research and Innovation for Alberta's Agriculture and Food Sector in 2000 that outlines their strategic directions to capitalize on potential national and international markets. Their policies for research and innovation include

  • Developing a world-class research and development system in selected areas, complemented by an equally advanced research and innovation system that will commercialize Albertan inventions and breakthroughs. AARI is attempting to have various research facilities collaborate across the board for more efficient knowledge sharing.
  • Increasing the province's focus on improving the human health benefits of food. Through an interdisciplinary approach to food and human health, new discoveries and enhanced agriculture/food products can be developed to improve the health of Alberta's citizens. Using an integrated, multi-sector approach could yield huge social and economic benefits for Alberta.
  • Building on Alberta's strengths in primary agricultural production and science. By developing knowledge and technology, innovative practices and production systems can improve crop yields for Alberta's farmers. Alberta is already an international leader in farming techniques. A continued emphasis on primary production will further increase the efficiency for the province's agricultural producers.
  • Improving Alberta's environment through ethical practices. By understanding the adverse affects the agricultural industry has on the environment, AARI researchers can reduce environmental damage and ensure a healthy future for all Albertans.

These four policies characterize the direction for AARI and its commitment to research, development and innovation with an underlying concern for the environment.
