Alberta Health and Wellness

In 2003 the Government of Alberta launched "Fight the Bite," a public awareness campaign about West Nile virus. This is just one of many initiatives undertaken by Alberta Health and Wellness.Health research allows for understanding the basis for disease and creates solutions to prevent, treat, and diagnose these diseases. Research also helps to determine the most effective ways to keep Albertans healthy and avoid heath complications before they appear. By conducting research and analysis, Alberta Health and Wellness can make informed decisions and set appropriate policies for health care, health services and health research.

In 2001-2002, Alberta Health and Wellness invested approximately $14 million into Alberta-based research programs. The ministry also encourages innovative strategies through its offshoot Health Innovation Fund, which has funded 48 diverse projects that encourage regional health authorities to develop novel ways of delivering health services to Albertans.

Approximately 60 percent of Alberta Health and Wellness investments has gone to applied, health-service research organizations. This supports the ministry's policy of development and improvement within the health system to constantly improve service to Alberta's citizens. The remaining 40 percent of investments supports an integrated provincial cancer research program covering a wide range of issues dealing with the disease, from clinical treatment to population studies.

Alberta Health and Wellness makes major contributions to a variety of provincial institutions including the Alberta Cancer Board (ACB). Created by the Alberta Government, ACB coordinates all cancer research, prevention and treatment programs in the province. The services provided by ACB include cancer prevention and screening, public education, diagnosis and treatment, and cancer research. Fundin for ACB is provided by the Alberta Government, including Alberta Health and Wellness. The policy of ACB focuses on ongoing research and prevention to contain cancer as much as possible.
