Patents Database

Rat and Gopher Trap (Patent No: 224795)The patents database you are about to explore was compiled from patent records published by the Canadian Patent Office. All patent records are for patents issued to Albertans. There are a few stipulations on the patents included in the database. A number of Albertan inventors have filed for patents exclusively in the United States but not in Canada. These have not been included in the database. Also, an inventor had to be living in Alberta at the time their invention was patented. An inventor may not necessarily be born in Alberta. If an inventor was born and raised in Alberta but moved from the province before receiving any patents, they were not included. The major stipulation for inclusion in the database is residency in Alberta while the patent was approved.

The date range from 1905 to 1975 has been chosen for a specific reason. Alberta became a province in 1905. Before this, patents filed in Alberta were registered under the Northwest Territories. From March 31, 1976 to 1983, the Canadian Patent Office stopped listing from which province the inventors came. For this reason, the database ends in 1975. However, the Patent Office is updating its patent records, and is anticipated that these missing records will be added during a second phase of the database development.

Each patent record has a story—the story of an inventor, their invention and what has become of each. Explore the database and the accompanying Inventors and Inventions sections of this website to learn about Alberta's century of inventive spirit and the nature of invention.
