Dr. John Remmers

Dr. John Remmers Dr. John Remmers research puts a lot of people to sleep, but that’s a good thing. The University of Calgary professor has been studying sleep-related disorders and inventing methods of treatment for nearly 25 years, helping people cope with the serious, yet relatively unknown condition of sleep apnea.

Remmers graduated from Dartmouth College, received his MD from Harvard Medical School and has spent his professional life in the area of physiology. He worked for Dartmouth College and the University of Texas before coming to Calgary 20 years ago, where he is a professor in the Department of Medicine and the Department of Physiology and Biophysics. Remmers has been inventing devices to help diagnose and treat sleep apnea for most of his career, being one of the first scientists to identify the disease and begin searching for a cure. He continues to work in the laboratory, studying the respiratory systems of frogs and rats, and in the clinic working with patients.

An Alberta Heritage Foundation for Medical Research Heritage Scientist, Remmers is also a member of the American Society for Clinical Investigation and the American Physiological Society. He has previously held the position of Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Applied Physiology and the Director of the Centre for Advancement of Health.

Dr. Remmers is the President and CEO of Saga Tech Electronics Inc., a company that develops and manufactures some of his inventions.
