Spin-Off Company Development

An effective way for an inventor to capitalize on their innovation is to create a new company solely devoted to manufacturing and marketing their invention. These newly formed organizations are called spin-off companies.

For example, if an inventor is working for the National Research Council (NRC) and has created or discovered a groundbreaking technology, the inventor can choose to create a new, spin-off company to market their new technology effectively. This company would be referred to as a spin-off from the NRC. This is a common practice, with the NRC creating over 50 spin-off companies since 1995. Spin-off companies are not to be confused with start-up companies. Using the previous NRC example, a start-up company would be comprised of non-NRC employees using NRC principles.
