University of Calgary Spin-Off Companies
Numerous spin-off companies representing University of Calgary research in the life and physical sciences, and information technology have been formed with the assistance of
University Technologies International Inc. (UTI). The following selection of spin-off company profiles speaks to this diversity and the research excellence at the U of C.
Oncolytics Biotech Inc.
With headquarters in Calgary, Oncolytics Biotech grew out of the discoveries of Dr. Matt Coffey
and Dr. Patrick Lee at the University of Calgarys Department of Microbiology and Infectious Diseases. In 1998, the company was founded with the intention to produce new cancer treatments, with their main product being REOLYSIN®. Clinical trial processes have been begun using REOLYSIN® to treat both T2 prostate cancer and malignant glioma (brain cancer).

Wi-LAN
Founded by Dr. Hatim Zaghloul working in partnership with Dr. Michel Fattouche at the University of Calgary, Wi-LAN develops and produces wireless communication solutions. This technology is patented and their product line is constantly expanding. Wireless aims to bring Internet and other communications networks to individuals and institutions of all kinds without the use of wires or
fibre optic cable.

SagaTech Electronics Inc.
Created by Dr.
John Remmers of the University of Calgary, SagaTechs focus is the development and manufacture of technology to treat and study sleep apnea, the sudden waking caused by an interruption in breathing patterns. One of SagaTechs key products is a sleep recorder that helps people to monitor their sleep apnea and the effectiveness of therapy, the technology for which SagaTech also manufactures.
