Alberta Business Awards of Distinction

The Alberta Business Awards of Distinction recognize both long-standing and emerging innovators in the province.The Alberta Business Awards of Distinction were created in 1991 to recognize and celebrate the major contributors to Alberta's business community. Thirteen awards recognize and encourage innovative and outstanding business practices in Alberta

  • The CIBC Small Business Award is given to a small business owner who best reflects the spirit and success of Alberta’s small business community.
  • The Employer of People with Disabilities Award recognizes businesses that demonstrate innovative hiring, training and development practices to breakdown the barriers for people with disabilities.
  • The Western Economic Diversification Canada’s Export Award is given to an organization that has demonstrated outstanding achievement outside of Alberta.
  • The University of Alberta/Telus Workplace Learning Award recognizes an employer who successfully integrates training and learning opportunities for their employees with provincial post-secondary institutes.
  • The WCB Safety in the Workplace Award is given to organizations that have implemented effective injury prevention and disability management programs.
  • The CMA Ethics in Business Award recognizes companies whose ethical business practices meet or exceed the standards of their peers while exceeding their client’s expectations.
  • The EPCOR Triple Bottom Line Award is given to companies that demonstrate good business performance while maintaining financial success, environmental commitment and community involvement.
  • The Young Entrepreneurs Award recognizes students who have participated in the "Company Program," an after-school program to create, manage and oversee every aspect of a mock business. The most successful student business receives this award.
  • The Employer of Youth Award is given to an organization that has demonstrated outstanding achievement in hiring youth and providing them with career opportunities.
  • The Agrivalue New Venture Award recognizes an Alberta business that has achieved commercial success in adding value to the agriculture sector.
  • The Indian and Northern Affairs Aboriginal Relations Award is given to the Alberta business that demonstrates outstanding achievement in Aboriginal business, employment and training.
  • The Zoom/Jet Stream Marketing Award recognizes organizations that have developed and implemented a successful marketing campaign that has had a significant impact on the company.
  • The Eagle Feather Business Award is given to a First Nation’s-owned business that demonstrates outstanding achievement in the corporate world.

Alberta E-Business Leadership Awards

The Alberta E-Business Leadership Awards recognize the successful implementation of e-business tools and techniques.he Alberta E-Business Leadership Awards recognize the successful implementation of e-business tools and techniques.The Alberta E-Business Leadership Awards were created to celebrate the successful integration of e-business tools and techniques. These awards honour organizations and initiatives of all sizes based on their positive impact to the Internet and e-business/e-commerce. Held each November in Edmonton, the E-Business Leadership Awards recognize eight Alberta companies based on excellence in design, revenue growth, customer satisfaction, industry segment leadership and expense reduction.Bob Gardiner, President of E-Strategies International, is the founder of the E-Business Awards program. The purpose of these awards is the promotion of successful electronic business in Alberta. These awards showcase Alberta’s best e-businesses and highlight the positive benefits of e-business in Alberta, and are crucial in promoting innovative businesses in Alberta.

Alberta Emerald Awards

The Alberta Emerald Awards are presented by the Alberta Emerald Foundation for Environmental Excellence (AEFEE). AEFEE was founded in 1991 to recognize outstanding initiative and leadership concerning environmental issues. AEFFE has created the emerald awards to celebrate these environmental achievements and encourages all Albertan citizens, corporations and organizations to participate.

The objectives of the AEFEE and the Emerald Awards include

  • Developing and stimulating public awareness for environmental progress and protection in Alberta
  • Recognizing Alberta’s achievements, excellence and leadership in environmental matters
  • Celebrating Alberta's individuals, organizations and corporations with environmentally supportive programs

The Emerald Awards are awarded by an independent panel of expert judges and explore number of criteria, including commitment to the preservation, protection, enhancement or sustainability of the environment, and a positive, long-term impact on quality of air/land/water, preservation of biological diversity, climate change/greenhouse gases and public/corporate attitudes towards the environment.

Alberta E Awards

The Alberta E Awards, celebrating employee excellence in the province, were created in 1997 by Alberta Venture magazine. The purpose of these awards is to recognize an employee’s contribution to the success of their company. The E Awards are Canada’s only province-wide employee recognition program. There are eight categories of awards ranging from community enhancement to exemplary young employee.

"The E Awards provides a tool to these business people and employers to recognize the employees who are fundamental to profitable and effective operations," explains Venture editor Ruth Kelly. "Finding and keeping qualified and quality staff has been repeatedly identified as a key issue by Alberta Venture’s business readers." Successful companies, successful progress and successful innovation depend on skilled and capable employees. The E Awards recognize and celebrate these employees and encourage excellence in the workplace.

Alberta Science and Technology (ASTech) Awards

In 1989, select members of Alberta’s advanced technology sector acknowledged the need to celebrate the exceptional achievement of the leaders in their field. This need led to the establishment of the Alberta Science and Technology Leadership Awards. The ASTech Awards recognize the thriving science and technology community and its ingenuity to transform knowledge into technology.

The ASTech Foundation is a non-profit organization created to promote and celebrate scientific achievement in Alberta. The foundation fulfills its mission by raising community awareness about the exciting advancements that will eventually affect our daily lives. ASTech’s efforts to promote science and technology culminate in their yearly event, the ASTech Awards Gala, which alternates annually between Edmonton and Calgary.

GALA Awards

The Alberta Business Awards of Distinction is a gala affair, recognizing succesful innovators from across the province.The GALA Awards (Growing Alberta Leadership Awards) were created in 1998 by Growing Alberta. Growing Alberta is affiliated with the Agriculture and Food Council, an industry led organization that represents all aspects of Alberta’s agriculture and food sector. Their funding comes from both the private and public sector and is headed by a committee of industry and government leaders who direct policy for the organization.

GALA awards are given to individuals and organizations in all sectors of the agriculture and food industry that demonstrate an outstanding commitment to environmental conservation and innovation. The awards include the Green Team Award for environmental protection and the Innovation Awards. Since 1998, over 30 individuals have received the Green Team award for a variety of reasons: demonstrating responsible stewardship of air, soil and water quality as well as food safety. The Innovation Award has been given to individuals who have shown leadership by developing new products or processes including composting, genetics and nutraceuticals (dietary and nutritional foods).

Manning Innovation Awards

The Ernest C. Manning Awards Foundation has been recognizing and encouraging innovation in Canada since 1982. The Ernest C. Manning Awards Foundation has been recognizing and encouraging innovation in Canada since 1982. The Ernest C. Manning Foundation introduced their Manning Innovation Awards in 1982 to encourage and recognize innovation in Canada. All people living in Canada as citizens are eligible. These awards range from $10,000 to $100,000 and are awarded for a recent innovation in developing and marketing a new concept, process or procedure. These awards are held in the fall of each year in a different Canadian city. The Manning Innovation Awards also recognize young Canadians, giving prizes to eight innovative projects selected by a team of judges at the annual Canada Science Fair.

The Ernest C. Manning Foundation was created in 1980 to encourage innovation in Canada. The awards soon became the means for this encouragement. The Foundation is a non-profit, national organization that receives funding from business donations and private individuals. Nominations for the Innovation Awards are received from across the country, from a variety of fields, since the awards recognize innovation in "any form of human endeavour." Past winners have come from such diverse fields as agriculture, medical science, molecular biology, survival and safety, consumer products and communications.
