Notion of Everyone's Grandfather

In Donna von Hauff's colourful biography of Grant MacEwan she incorporates the notion of Everyone's Grandfather directly in the title of the book. The concept of everyone's grandfather is most appropriate when describing Grant MacEwan because Canadians and Albertans alike benefited from his thoughts, words, and deeds. Macewan's actions never alienated any group or individual, rather he reached out to as many people as he could regardless of age, ethnicity, or creed.

MacEwan's words and decisions were always intended in the best interest of Canadians. He firmly believed that human greed would be the downfall of humanity and warned against excesses so that future Canadians could live long and prosper. MacEwan's wholesome lifestyle combined with humour and integrity inspired the young and old alike.

Grant MacEwan had such a joy for life and loved nothing more than to share stories and knowledge with those who were wiling to listen. As the guest speaker at Grant MacEwan Community College's Convocation in 1984, MacEwan said, "I'd like to think of you as my grandchildren and I would be proud if you called me gramps." MacEwan recognized the important role he played-he was the inspiration for thousands of young students trying to gain knowledge and life experiences. MacEwan Day is celebrated every year at the City Centre Campus to acknowledge the hard work of past and present college staff. In addition, MacEwan Day is an opportunity to reflect on the school's namesake. Grant MacEwan was a grandfather-like figure. He was warm, humourous, inspirational, and reveled in the opportunity to share his knowledge with others.
