Historic Places Initiative

The Historic Places Initiative is a collaboration involving all levels of government - local, provincial, territorial and federal. By employing all levels of government the initiative effectively enables Canadians to learn, value and conserve Canada's historic places. To faciliate such an important and ambitious objective government officials have developed three key tools:

Alberta became a partner in the Historic Places Initiative in 2003. Through the work of the Historic Places Stewardship Section, Alberta promotes the objectives of the Historic Places Initiative. The Historic Places Designation Program is working to list Alberta's Provincial and Municipal Historic Resources on the Canadian Register of Historic Places. The Heritage Conservation Advisory Services Program promotes the use of the Standards and Guidelines for the Conservation of Historic Places in Canada. The Municipal Heritage Partnership Program promotes greater municipal involvement in the identification and management of locally significant historic places leading to the listing of Municipal Historic Resources on the Canadian Register of Historic Places.

There has been a dramatic detioration of buildings throughout Canada in the past 30 years; the Historic Places Initiative seeks to reverse this trend by providing the tools and information for citizens to take action and conserve the historic places that they value.
