  • ALBERTA GOVERNMENT TELEPHONES BUILDING
    On Saturday, January 29, 1921, the Alberta Government officially opened its long distance telephone service to the Peace River country.
  • ALBERTA HOTEL
    The first Alberta hotel structure (1895) was incorporated into the new 1902 building by architect James E. Wise.
  • ALBERTA HOTEL (CALGARY)
    One of Calgary’s earliest sandstone buildings, the hotel was popular among ranchers for their forays into town, and was home to a number of colorful characters who frequented its Long Bar, reputed to be the longest between Winnipeg and Hong Kong

    The Alberta Hotel, Red Deer's first, was erected on this site in 1891.

    These barracks were built for the Royal North West Mounted Police in 1904.

    Alex Flemming joined the North West Mounted Police in 1881 and was initially posted to Fort Walsh.
  • ALEXANDRA SCHOOL
    Alexandra School was constructed in 1902 to plans by architect William M. Dodd, who later designed the old Calgary City Hall.
  • ALLEN (PALACE) THEATRE
    Barney Allen and his two sons, Jules and Jay, found the first big international movie theatre circuit in 1906; it was Canadian, based in Brantford, Ontario. In 1909 they made Calgary their base of operations and opened the Allen (Strand) Theatre on 8th Avenue SE.
  • ANDERTON BLOCK AND HORSESHOE LIQUOR STORE, 1909
    The Anderton Block was completed in 1909 by the prominent local contractor James S. Lambert.
  • ARLINGTON HOTEL
    The Arlington Hotel was erected in 1899 by Thomas P. Ellis on the site of the former Queen's Hotel, and remained under continuous family ownership until 1969.
