Belloy

Category : Locality

This former Edmonton, Dunvegan and British Columbia Railway station was established in 1916 and was named in honour of Madame Belloy, a Belgian soprano who sang for the Belgian Relief Fund during World War I. Octavie Belloy was born in 1894 in Borgerhout, and made her operatic debut at the Royal Flemish Opera in January 1911. From 1915 to 1918, she performed many concerts in the United States and Canada. After the war she spent a few years as principal singer for a company in New York. She returned to Belgium in 1925 to rejoin the Royal Flemish Opera. The station was likely named by the railway engineer, Maurice Polet, who came from Belgium. In 1916 he also named the Manir station 21 kilometres to the west. At the same site was established the Grizzly Bear Post Office, which opened in December 1916. The name was changed to Belloy in May 1926. Belloy post office closed July 31, 1969. Approximately 39 km east of Spirit River.
