Buchanan Ridge

This ridge was named after the Honourable William Asbury Buchanan, (1876-1954). He was educated at Trenton, Warworth and Brighton, all in Ontario. At the age of 16, he became a "printer's devil" with the Peterborough Examiner. He later joined the staff of the Peterborough Review as a reporter and then worked for the Toronto Evening Telegram. In 1905 he arrived in Lethbridge and by 1907, he founded the daily paper, The Lethbridge Herald. In 1909 he was elected Member of the Legislative Assembly for Lethbridge City. He served in the House of Commons from 1911 to 1921 and in 1925 was made a senator. Throughout his political career he was an active newspaperman. On 17 May 1949, he was made an Honorary Doctor of Laws of the University of Alberta in recognition of his distinguished service.
