The precise origin of the name of this railway point is unknown although it may have been named after a place in England. When it was the terminus of the Alberta and Great Waterways Railway it was known as Cache 23. In 1917 the name Lynton was applied to the station at this location.

Approximately 22 km east south-east of Fort McMurray.
