About this volunteer: Krista Hummell was born in Kitchener, Ontario.
Krista began volunteer work in grade nine. A sports player herself, Krista volunteered to coach basketball and baseball teams. She was selected as the southern Ontario representative for the Canadian Adventure in Citizenship tour, encouraged her family to billet foreign exchange students during summers, won the best female athlete award, and was an Ontario Scholar. Academically, Krista had a particular strenth in mathematics, a gift she used to tutor free, other students who struggled.
Krista spent 23 years in the Canadian Forces (CF) and retired as a major. During this time, she volunteered as a Big Sister. Krista worked as an addictions' counselor at a women's recovery centre for two years and is now working for the CF / National Defence Ombudsman. She has a degree in Ministry and will complete a Masters in Counselling Psychology in June 2005. She volunteers for Inn From The Cold and currently facilitates, free of charge, a women's group, which she founded seven years ago in partnership with the Gay and Lesbian Community Services Association.
Krista and her partner call Calgary home. For work Krista currently commutes from Edmonton on weekends with their wee Yorkie, Kiva, a male diva.
