A summary of the oral history transcript of Louie Protti in which he discusses his
father's and mother's life, their emigration to North America,
and his own
in Alberta.
Father and Mother:
- Louie's father was Giovanni Batista Protti. He was
born in Cimolias on the 3rd of June, 1874, the son of
Sebastiano Domenico Protti. Louie's mother was Angela
Maria Protti, and she was born on the 28th of October,
1881 in Cimolias.
- Cimolias used to be in the Province of Udine, but is
now in the Province of Pordenone.
- Giovanni came to New York, alone, at the beginning of
the century in 1903. He worked in the States for a
couple of years in New York, Pittsburgh, and Oregon.
Finally he moved to Canada and worked in the Coal Branch
for awhile before landing in Pocahontas at Jasper
National Park.
- In 1913, Giovanni brought his wife and Louie's older
brother, Sebastiano (now known as Sam), to Pocahontas.
Giovanni was working as a lumber cutter for the mines at
this time. The family stayed there until the outbreak of
World War 1.
- Giovanni returned to Italy for the war and eventually
took ill (suffering from Asthma) and died in Belino, on
the 8th of January, 1918. Louie's Mother died on
December 27, 1917, during the influenza epidemic.
- Louie thinks his Father may have worked as a stone
mason and in the lumber business before he left for
Canada.
- Angela
Maria Protti used to sell handmade wooden dishes and
spoons in Trieste before she moved to Canada. Once in
Canada, she kept busy caring for the home and her
children. Her grave is still at Pocahontas.
- Louie was born in 1914, his sister Victoria in 1915,
and another brother named Angelo (now today as John) was
born sometime after that. They were all born in
Pocahontas.
- Giovanni would not have known that his wife was
already dead when he passed, since he was in Italy.
Luigi Del Bosco became the legal guardian of the
children, and was the one who contacted the Red Cross in
Italy to learn about Giovanni's death.
