Organization Name: Volunteer Calgary

Volunteer's Name: Darrel Janz

About this volunteer:
Darrel Janz is the co-anchor and co-producer of CFCN News at 6. Darrel has been with the station for 30 years, which speaks not only volumes of his dedication, but also of the fulfillment he gets from his job every day.

Born, raised and schooled in Saskatchewan, Darrel graduated from Saskatchewan Teacher's College and taught for a year in one of the province's last rural one-room schoolhouses! He then entered broadcasting - a career path that took him from Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan to Montreal, Quebec, before arriving in Calgary and joining CFCN. Darrel continued to satisfy his yearning for teaching – in the spring of 2002 he retired after 27 years of instructing broadcast journalism students at both S.A.I.T (Southern Alberta Institute for Technology) and Mount Royal College. He now works with 24 of his former students in the CFCN newsroom including the Director of News and Public Affairs and the Managing Editor.

Involved in numerous fund-raising activities like the Easter Seal Ability Council and The Heart and Stroke Foundation, Darrel can be regularly seen in the community volunteering his time. In addition, since June 2002 Darrel has resided on the Board of Health Partners International of Canada.

Organization Name: Volunteer Calgary

Volunteer's Name: Jesse McColl

About this volunteer:
“My mom decided that my sister and me weren’t doing much except sitting around at home, and so she took us once to volunteer. I’ve been doing it ever since.” These are the words of ten-year-old Jesse McColl, who in his spare time, plays soccer, runs around with friends, rides his scooter – and volunteers one Friday a month with Inn from the Cold at St. Stephen’s Anglican Church.

What sounds like it began as a parent’s attempt to instill the value of community involvement in her children, quickly developed into a lifelong commitment to helping others for this year’s Elementary Level Volunteer Calgary Leaders of Tomorrow Awards recipient. For two years, Jesse McColl has helped make beds and meals for Calgary’s homeless. He says he has no plans to stop anytime soon.

With a heart as big as his smile, McColl’s commitment helps promote the goals of the Inn From the Cold program. His genuinely non-judgmental acceptance of others contributes significantly to helping guests and volunteers feel more comfortable in what can be an awkward or uncomfortable circumstance for some. He acts as an excellent role model to us all.”
