Opened in 1976, The Native Cultural Arts Museum showcases cultural and creative achievements of the Native Peoples
of Canada and other other cultural areas of North America. Various aspects
of indigenous culture, past and present are represented. Originating as a
teaching aid for the Native Cultural Arts Program at Northern Lakes
College, the museum has grown into one of the most unique museums in
Western Canada. Exhibiting native cultural art, the museum is
dedicated to promoting a better understanding of indigenous culture. The
Native Cultural Arts Museum, located in Grouard, is also the home to
historical artifacts relating to the history of Grouard and its reputation
as a major centre of trade at and around the turn of the century including
a collection of historic photographs and newspapers available for viewing
on microfilm.
In addition to the Native Cultural Arts Museum, tours of the St.
Bernard mission are also available. St. Bernard Mission, completed
1902, is a registered historic site and features a large collection of
ecclesiastical objects and church vestments as well as original paintings
by the late Bishop Emile Grouard.
The Native Cultural Arts Museum is located in the Moosehorn Lodge building at Northern Lake College, Lesser Slave Lake, Grouard Campus. The
Village of Grouard is approximately 386 km northwest of Edmonton on
Highway 750.
