Fear and Encouragement - the Battle Song

The story of the Métis encouraging themselves with song attests to some of the influences on the story as well as to cultural differences at the time. To understand some of the incidents recorded that could be classed as encouragement of the troops, it is important to remember how different the two groups of fighting men were. The army men were strangers to each other, and to their commanders. The Métis men were friends, neighbours, relations, who had hunted worked and partied together. This context helps explain the reports of how the two groups were encouraged.
