Zoo, Calgary

The Calgary Zoo is a world-class facility. Many people know that it houses animals from around the world such as Panda Bears, but the Calgary Zoo is also home to animals you would find right here in Alberta, but might not have the chance to see on your own.

The Canadian Wilds features animal and plant species from different regions in Canada. The Rocky Mountains area displays montane forests and a unique forest burn exhibit, and the Northern Forest area features bogs and boreal forests. The pastures of the Aspen Woodlands are also there for interested visitors. Once completed, it will be the largest natural habitat display in Canada.

Some of the animals you will find in the Canadian Wilds include the Mule Deer and the Woodchuck in the Aspen Woodlands, the Cougar, Bighorn Sheep and the Grizzly Bear in the Rocky Mountains, and in the Northern Forests the Moose, Beaver and the Lynx will capture your imagination. Watch for the final two phases to be completed soon!

The Calgary Zoo does much more than house many amazing animals! They also take part in the active conservation of some of Alberta's endangered species. The Mountain Bluebird is one of the many species at risk in Alberta. The Calgary Zoo is working hard to save it from extinction through extensive research on Raccoon predation. The Swift Fox is another species at risk that the Calgary Zoo has been active in trying to save. They have participated in reintroduction efforts since the early 1980s and their research continues through to the present.
