This lake is called 55 for its location at mile 255 along the Northern Alberta Railways line. It is one of four lakes in the area that takes its name from mileage on the railway tracks. Officially named in 1991 after field research determined the name to be well established and in local use.

Approximately 47 km south-east of Fort McMurray.
