It is a translation of the Cree word muskiwa. Many local residents refer to Bear River as Bear Greek. A letter to the Surveyor General from W.G. McFarlane, DLS, dated 1909 referred to this feature as Bear Creek. However, the official name is still Bear River. (see Bear River)

Flows south-east into Bear Lake approximately 17 km north-west of Grande Prairie.
