During World War I, he joined the Seaforth Highlanders of Canada (72nd Battalion, CEF). By 1915, he had attained the rank of major. Shortly after the war, he resumed his seat as dean of the Faculty of Applied Science at the University of British Columbia. He and his wife died in an airplane crash at Alta Lake, B.C.
