The cultural life of an ethnic community is embodied in many different ways. These traditions often centre
around things like food, music, sports, and religion. In a multicultural society
such as Canada, these cultural traditions grow evermore complex as cultures blend and adapt. It is very interesting to compare and
contrast just how differently peoples of various ethnic backgrounds have adjusted to life in modern Alberta.
Here we would like to share with you some of the aspects of
Ukrainian culture that continue to be important for many Ukrainian
Albertans.
Ukrainian
culture is a fascinating mix of tradition, religion and folkways.
Although the Ukrainians celebrate their history in Alberta and
their own past traditions, they are also progressively adapting to
the changing world, and their specifically Albertan Ukrainian
culture. In Alberta, there are a wide range of organizations such as
Shumka, the Canadian
Institute of Ukrainian Studies and the Ukrainian
Cultural Heritage Village that celebrate
traditional dance, cuisine, folklife, crafts, art, business and contemporary
writing of thge Ukrainian way of life - past and present.
Here, through a series of Heritage Trails audio clips, produced
by CKUA Radio
Network, we would like to share with you the story
and traditions of Ukrainian Christmas. Simply choose one of the
audio clips listed above, and find out what Christmas might have
been like for the early Ukrainian settlers in the province!
