University Technologies International Inc.
Similar to the University of Alberta's Research
Services Office, the University of Calgary created the University
Technologies International (UTI) to commercialize the scientific
innovations of its researchers. Established June 1, 1989, UTI is dedicated
to "creating business opportunities from scientific innovation." Although UTI was initially created by the U of C, their scope has expanded to
include other research groups and corporations, including the University
of Lethbridge and Calgary Regional Health Authority.
The strength of UTI is communication. UTI provides
investors with technology-based business opportunities, uniting the
breakthroughs of the laboratories with stakeholders. This requires a
number of diverse skills: marketing, customer service, licensing and
corporate strategy. UTI also functions as a consultant to established and
newly-started businesses looking for growth opportunities in the
high-technology field. The UTI contributes to Albertas knowledge-based
economy by encouraging the technology sector in both research and
development and commercialization.
