Pollution Control Apparatus for a Plant (Patent No: 908462)

Description: THE EMBODIMENTS OF THE INVENTION IN WHICH AN EXCLUSIVE PROPERTY OR PRIVILEGE IS CLAIMED ARE DEFINED AS FOLLOWS:

1. Pollution control apparatus for measuring the velocity of effluent gas being discharged from the dispersion stack of a plant to the atmosphere, said apparatus comprising:
a housing operatively connected to said stack at a predetermined height on said staok, the housing being insulated from both said stack and said atmosphere;
fluid £low velocity measuring means including a pitot tube associated with said housing extending into the path of the effluent gas being discharged from said stack so as to measure the velocity thereof;
indicating means cooperating with said velocity measuring means for indicating the velocity being measured thereby, the indicating means including a transducer for measuring the differential pressure across said pitot take and emitting an electrical signal, and including strip recording means for recording the electrical signal; and
purging means cooperating with said measuring means for purging solid components of the effluent gas being measured from said measuring means.

2. The apparatus of claim 1 including temperature sensing means associated with the interior of said housing for sensing the temperature thereof; and
valve-actuated cooling air injection means operatively engaging said temperature sensing means for injecting cooling air into the interior of said housing.

3. The apparatus of claim 1 including pi tot tube moving means coupled to said pi tot tube for moving said pitot tube across said stack transverse to the direction of flow of effluent gas therethrough.

4. Pollution control apparatus for measuring the velocity of effluent gas being discharged from the dispersion stack of a plant to the atmosphere, said apparatus comprising:
a housing operatively connected to said stack at a predetermined height on said stack;
fluid flow velocity measuring means including a pi tot tube associated with said housing extending into the path of the effluent gas being discharged from said stack so as to measure the velocity thereof;
indicating means cooperating with said velocity measuring means for indicating the velocity being measured thereby, said indicating means including a transducer for measuring the differential pressure across said pito·t tube and emitting an electrical signal;
purging means cooperating with said measuring means for purging solid components of the effluent gas being measured from said measuring means.

The apparatus of claim 4 wherein said housing is insulated from both said stack and said atmosphere and operatively engaged said stack at a pre-selected height above ground; and said fluid flow velocity measuring means includes a pitot tube extending into the path of greatest velocity of said effluent gas being discharged from said stack.

6. The apparatus of claim 4 wherein said housing is insulated from both said stack and said atmosphere.
7. The apparatus of claim 6 including temperature sensing means associated with the interior of said housing for sensing the temperature thereof; and
valve-actuated cooling air injection means operatively engaging said temperature sensing means for injecting cooling air into the interior of said housing.

8. The apparatus of claim 4 including pi tot tube moving means coupled to said pitot tube for moving said pitot tube across said stack transverse to the direction of flow of effluent gas therethrough.

9. Apparatus according to claim 6 wherein the purging means includes air injection means adapted to maintain the temperature in the housing at o substantially below the stack temperature but above about 220°F. to prevent water condensation.

10. Apparatus according to claim 9 wherein separate air injection means are provided for purging said housing.

11. Apparatus according to claim 4 wherein said purging means includes valve-operated air injection means for injecting purging air.

12. The apparatus of claim 11 including timing means operatively engaging said valve-operated air injection means for periodically injecting purging air into both said measuring means and said indicating means.
