National Research Council

The Obstacle Awareness System radar system is just one of many NRC projects in development.

The National Research Council (NRC) has recently released a strategic plan to further promote research and development in Canada's science and technology field—Vision 2006. Essentially, Vision 2006 reaffirms the NRC's commitment to Canadian research and development and the efforts to transform Canada into one of the world’s top five research and development nations.

OASys technology was developed with financial assistance from the NRC Industrial Research Assistance Program (NRC-IRAP).

The NRC believes research and innovation are important factors in the economic future of all Canadians. Their mandate for improved research and development within the country relies on cooperation between government, industry and academia that integrates innovation at the national, international and community level. According to this policy of innovative mobilization, the NRC hopes to establish Canada as "a nation of innovators," at the forefront of the world’s knowledge community. The NRC is involved in all levels of this process—from ideas to inventions.

The NRC's strategy focuses on cooperation between industry, government and academia to achieve a number of goals

Establish the NRC as a leader in newly developing and emerging areas of research, including multidisciplinary areas that would provide solutions for national issues

Maintain the high levels of achievement in existing research and engineering domains, an area where Canada is already a world leader

Provide guidance and direction for national investments in large-scale science and technology projects to further develop Canada’s research and development infrastructure

Effectively contribute to federal strategies including national security, climate change, healthcare and innovation

Achieve maximum benefits from the capital invested in research and development for all Canadians

By 2006, the NRC hopes to be recognized by the federal government as Canada's leading developer of new science and technology-based research and be valued for its innovative commercialization of these new inventions.
