Description: No. 178,959. Ship Course Retainer.
Dispositif a tenir le navire dans son cours.

Gudlaugur Palsen, Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, 28th August, 1917; 6 years. Filed 18th April, 1917. Receipt No. 278,611.

Claim.—1. The combination with a ship's compass and pointer and ship's rudder, of mechanism interposed between the compass, pointer and rudder for deflecting the rudded either in one direction or the other to correspond with the deflection of the compass pointer out of its normal position.

2. The combination with a ship's compass and ship's rudder, of means operated from the compass for automatically controlling the position of the rudder.

3. The combination with the ship's compass and pointer and ship's rudder, of an electric motor, and means operated by the motor for swinging the rudder either in one direction or the other, electric circuits extending through the motor for operating the motor in opposite directions, and means operated by the compass pointer for closing one circuit when the pointer moves in one direction and for closing the other circuit when the pointer moves in the opposite direction.

4. The combination with a ship's compass and pointer and ship's rudder, of an electric motor, and means operated by the motor for swinging the rudder either in one direction or the other, electric circuits extending through the motor for operating the motor in opposite directions, a pair of mercury wells interposed in each circuit, a bridging fork co-acting with each pair of wells, and means operated by the compass pointer for dipping one fork in one pair of wells when moved in one direction and for dipping the other fork in the other pair of wells when moved in the opposite direction.

5. The combination with a ship's compass and pointer, an electric motor, a drum formed on the shaft thereof, a pair of circuits passing through the motor rotating the motor in opposite directions, a cable wound around the drum, and tackle co-acting therewith and attached to opposite sides of the rudder, and means operated by the compass needle when moved in one direction for closing a circuit through the motor to rotate the motor in one direction, and means operated by the pointer when moved in the opposite direction to close the other circuit to rotate the motor in the opposite direction.

6. The combination with a ship's compass and pointer, a suitable horizontally disposed ring, a travelling carrier mounted upon such ring, two pairs of mercury wells carried by the carrier, bridging forks having two fork members co-acting with each pair of wells and having an upwardly extending arm into which the compass pointer extends.

7. The combination with a ship's compass and ship's rudder, of means operated from the ship's compass for automatically deflecting the rudder so as to deflect the ship from its course at any predetermined point.
