Locomotive Valve Gear Mechanism (Patent No: 312942)

Inventor: Cotton, John A.

Location: Calgary

Comments: N/A

Description: WHAT I CLAIM AS MY INVENTION IS:-

(1) In a locomotive valve gear mechanism, the combination with the valve rod, the combination lever pivotally attached to the rod and the radius rod, of a pivot connection between the radius rod and the combination lever, said connection being adjustable towards and away from the pivot connection connecting the valve rod and the combination lever and operating means actuated by the reversing gear of the valve gear mechanism when moved to its forward or rear positions to pass the radius rod pivot connection aforesaid towards the pivot connection between the valve rod and the combination lever.
(2) In a locomotive valve gear mechanism, the combination with the valve rod, the combination lever pivotally attached to the rod and the radius rod, of a pivot connection between the radius rod and the combination lever said connection being adjustable towards and away from the pivot connection connecting the valve rod and the combination lever and operating means actuated by the reversing gear of the valve gear mechanism when moved to its forward or rear positions to pass the radius rod pivot connection aforesaid towards the pivot connection between the valve rod and the combination lever, said operating means being designed also to pass the radius rod pivot connection quickly away form the pivot connection between the valve rod and the combination lever in the initial return movement of the reversing gear.
(3) In a locomotive valve gear mechanism, the combination with the valve rod, the combination lever pivotally attached to the rod and the radius rod, of a pivot connection between the radius rod and the combination lever said connection being adjustable towards and away from the pivot connection connecting the valve rod and the combination lever and operating means actuated by the reversing gear of the valve gear mechanism when moved to its forward or rear positions to pass the aforesaid pivot connections into axial alignment.
(4) In a locomotive valve gear mechanism, the combination with the valve rod, the combination lever pivotally attached to the rod and the radius rod, of a member slidably carried by the combination lever and movable in a direction radial to the pivot connection aforesaid, means pivotally connecting the radius rod to the member and means actuated by the forward or rear movement of the reversing gear of the valve gear mechanism for passing the pivot connection between the radius rod and the sliding member into axial alignment with the pivot connection between the valve rod and the combination lever.
(5) In a locomotive valve gear mechanism, the combination with the forked rear end of the valve rod, the forked upper end of the combination lever pivotally attached to the forked end of the valve rod and the radius rod, of a block mounted between the forked ends of the combination lever and slidably carried thereby to move in a direction radial to the pivot connection between the combination lever and the valve rod, a pivot pin connecting the radius rod to the sliding block and an operating connection between the sliding block and the reversing gear of the valve gear mechanism, said connection being adapted to pass the pivot pin of the radius rod towards the pivot connection between the combination lever and the valve rod when the reversing gear is moved to its forward or rear positions.
(6) In a locomotive valve gear mechanism, the combination with the forked rear end of the valve rod, the forked upper end of the combination lever pivotally attached to the forked end of the valve rod and the radius rod, of a block mounted between the forked ends of the combination lever and slidably carried thereby to move in a direction radial to the pivot connection between the combination lever and the valve rod, a pivot pin connecting the radius rod to the sliding block, a stationary control link having an arcuate slot therein, a link block slidably mounted in the slot, a hanger having the ends thereof pivotally connected to the blocks and an operating connection between the control link block and the reach rod of the reversing gear of the valve gear mechanism, said control link and associated parts being positioned such that when the reversing gear is moved to its forward or rear positions, the radius rod pivot pin will be moved into axial alignment with the pivot connection between the valve rid and the combination lever.
