Process for the Production of Titanium Containing Metal Alloys (Patent No: 575873)

Inventor: Alscope Explorations Ltd. (assignee)

Location: Edmonton

Comments: N/A

Description: 575,873. Issued May 12, 1959.
Process for the Production of Titanium Containing Metal Alloys.

Ernest S. Nossen, Fairlawn, New Jersey. U.S.A., and Hoy E. Parks, Clifton, New Jersey, U.S.A., assignors to Alscope Explorations Ltd., Edmonton. Alberta, Canada. Application June 29, 1957, Serial No. 732,055.

27 Claims

1. A process for the production of a titanium-containing alloy, comprising the steps of heating a titanium oxide with a metal at a temperature above the melting point of the metal, said metal having at the melting temperature a lower position in the electromotive series than titanium, said metal being present in excess to the quantity required for reducing said titanium oxide to metallic titanium, whereby a metal oxide and an alloy are obtained, said metal oxide comprising the oxygen of said titanium oxide and a portion of said metal, said alloy comprising the remaining portion of said metal and titanium, and separating said metal oxide and said alloy from each other.

12. A process for the production of titanium-containing alloy, comprising the steps of heating a titanium oxide and at least one other metal oxide with a metal at a temperature above the melting point of said metal, said metal having at the melting temperature a lower position in the electromotive series than titanium and the metal of said other metal oxide, said metal being present in excess to the quantity required for reducing said titanium oxide and said other metal oxide to the metallic state, whereby a metal oxide and an alloy are obtained, said metal oxide comprising the oxygen of said titanium oxide, the oxygen of said other metal oxide and a portion of said metal, said alloy comprising the remaining portion of said metal, titanium and the metal of said other metal oxide, and separating said metal oxide obtained and said alloy from each other.

22. A process for the production of a titanium-containing alloy, comprising the steps of melting aluminum in an inert atmosphere at a temperature of about 1000°C, adding titanium dioxide to the melt, said aluminum being present in excess to the quantity required for reducing said titanium dioxide to metallic titanium, whereby a melt comprising aluminum oxide, aluminum and titanium is obtained, adding to the melt a flux mixture comprising sodium chloride and calcium fluoride, whereby a first layer comprising said aluminum oxide and said flux mixture and a second layer of an alloy comprising aluminum and titanium are obtained, and separating said first and second layer.

27. A process for the production of a refractory metal-containing alloy which comprises reacting an oxide of at least one refractory metal with an equivalent amount of reducing metal above the melting point of said reducing metal, whereby said refractory metal oxide is reduced to the metallic state and an oxide of said reducing metal is formed, said reaction being carried out in the presence of an amount of molten non-reacting metal capable of alloying with said refractory metal, said reducing metal having a lower position in the electromotive series at the reaction temperature than said refractory metal, and separating said reducing metal oxide and said alloy from each other.
