A cigarette lighter of the type described, comprising a case containing a volatile fluid, a recessed area on the exterior of the case. a wick extending from the interior of the case through to the top of the recessed area, a flint exposed in the recessed area below said wick, a friction wheel freely rotatable on an axle disposed across the recessed area, said friction wheel abutting the flint, a combination pawl and snuffer rotatable on the axle. a ratchet joined integral on one side of the friction wheel and engageable with the friction wheel in one direction only. a pull cord attached to the combination snuffer and pawl to expose the wick and produce a spark when the cord is pulled and means to return the snuffer and pawl to the original position when the pull cord is released. said means consisting of a coiled spring secured to the combination paw! and snuffer at one extremity and anchored at its opposite extremity.

3. A cigarette lighter consisting of a flat case containing a volatile fluid, a recessed portion in one end of the case. said recessed portion being bounded by the side of the case, an axle carried between the side bounding the recessed portion, a friction wheel freely rotatable on the axle. a ratchet formed on one side of the friction wheel, a spring controlled combination snuffer and pawl on the axle, a wick exposed in the recessed area and normally covered by the snuffer, a flint exposed in the recessed area in contact with the friction wheel, a pull cord attached to the snuffer arranged so that pulling on the string will remove the snuffer from the wick and by engagement of the pawl with the ratchet cause a spark to ignite the volatile fuel at the wick, release of the string will permit the snuffer to cover the wick without causing engagement of the pawl and ratchet.
