Temperature Well Logging (Patent No: 958324)

Description: THE EMBODIMENTS OF THE INVENTION IN WHICH AN EXCLUSIVE PROPERTY OR PRIVILEGE IS CLAIMED, ARE DEFINED AS FOLLOWS:

1. A method of determining locations of vertical intervals having fluid flow therethrough in an underground section penetrated by a wellbore which comprises:
a) injecting a fluid having a bottom hole temperature different from that of the fluid normally injected or produced through said well;
b) stopping said injection and then;
c) running a series of time-spaced temperature logs in the wellbore over the section of interest whereby temperature anomalies appearing in the logs will indicate the zone or zones having fluid flow therethrough.

2. A method as defined in Claim 1 in which the fluid injected in step a) has a bottom hole temperature at least 10°F different from the fluid normally injected or produced through said well.

3. A method as defined in Claim 1 in which step c) includes running at least 3 time-spaced temperature logs in the first two hours after step b).

4. A method as defined in Claim 1 in which in step a) the fluid is injected for a period of not over about 6 hours.

5. A method of determining vertical intervals of an underground formation having fluid flow therethrough either into or from a wellbore penetrating said underground section which comprises the steps of:
a) injecting a first fluid at a constant rate and temperature for a first period of at least about 24 hours to obtain stabilization of temperature in the formation immediately surrounding the well;
b) immediately at the end of said first period, injecting a second fluid at a bottom hole temperature at least about 5°F different from said first fluid for a second period of from about 3 to about 6 hours;
c) immediately at the end of said second period running a series of time-spaced temperature logs in the well over the section of interest whereby temperature anomalies appearing in the log will indicate the zone or zones having fluid flow therethrough.

6. A method as defined in Claim 5 in which step c) includes the running of at least time-spaced logs in the first 2 hours immediately following step b).

7. A method of determining vertical intervals of injection of a fluid in an underground formation penetrated by a well bore which has a stabilized temperature which comprises:
a) injecting a fluid at a bottom hole temperature of at least about 5° F different from the stabilized temperature of the formation 6 near the well bore;
b) continuing step a) for at least about 6 hours and then 8 shutting in said well;
c) recording the change in temperature with time over the vertical interval of interest within said well bore.

8. A method as defined in Claim 7 in which step a) is continued for a period of between 3 to 24 hours.

9. A method as defined in Claim 8 in which said step c) includes running at least 3 time-spaced temperature logs in the first 2 hours after shutting in.

10. A method of determining locations of vertical intervals having fluid flow through an underground formation penetrated by a wellbore which comprises:
a) filling said wellbore at least partially with water,
b) thereafter shutting in said well for a period sufficient that the temperature of said water changes appreciably,
c) applying pressure in the wellbore to inject at least a part of the heated water from the wellbore into said underground formation, again shutting in said well and then,
e) running a series of time-spaced temperature logs in the wellbore over the section of interest whereby temperature anomalies appearing in the logs will indicate the zones having fluid flaw through.

11. A method as defined in Claim 10 in which step c) includes injecting water into the well at the surface at a temperature at least as hot as that attained by the water in the well during step b).
