[57] An improved method of transporting and shipping molten sulfur under conditions which essentially eliminates the danger of combustion and/or encountering toxic fumes of hydrides of sulfur. The present invention is directed to transporting or shipping pure molten sulfur by any suitable vehicle such as truck, tank cars, tanker barges, etc., and/or conduit, e.g., pipelines without the danger of possibly encountering toxic fumes of hydrides of sulfur and/or combustion comprising in-line treating at between about 275°F and 320°F molten sulfur containing very small amount of from about 200 to about 600 parts per million (ppm) of hydrides of sulfur such as H2S, where x is an integer of from I to 5 generally 2-4 or mixtures thereof by injecting SO2 separately into said reaction in-line and a one shot basic activator which can be nitrogen-containing compounds such as ammonia, ammonia sulfides, organic amines preferably polar-containing alkylamines such as hydroxy alkylamines and mixtures thereof in an amount of from about 1 to about
100 ppm, preferably from about 25 to about 50 ppm so as to form partial or complete complexion; allowing said reactants or complex of nitrogen-containing compound and SO2 to interact with the molten sulfur therein; removing any reaction by-products, e.g., water etc., if desired from said in-line and finally injecting the resulting molten sulfur into a pipeline and/or suitable vehicle such as a truck, tanker, railroad tanks, barges, etc. for transportation to a terminal station or point. Molten sulfur thus treated can be transported without evolving toxic or combustible gases.
