Crash Locating Device (Patent No: 889730)

Description: The embodiments of the invention in which an exclusive property or privilege is claimed are defined as follows:

1. A locating device comprising: a housing having top, centre and bottom sections; an inflatable balloon and a parachute assembly contained in the top section; means for releasab1y connecting at least an upper part of said top section to said centre section; spring means arranged to forcibly separate said top section from said centre section, locking means for retaining said spring means in a loaded condition; a reel and cable wound on said reel, said reel mounted in said centre section for rotation therein, said cable extending through said centre and top sections and connected to said balloon and said parachute assembly; a releasable weight in said bottom section; a cable attached to said releasable weight; an operating rod extending from said bottom section through said centre section, said operating rod actuated by the cable attached to said releasable weight to release said locking means retaining said spring.

2. A device as claimed in claim 1, including first guide means extending from said centre section into said top section, and second guide means in said top section cooperating with said first guide means for initial guidance of said top section on forcible separation thereof.

3. A device as claimed in claim 1 or 2, including a plane positioned beneath said parachute assembly, to provide an aerodynamic force on the ejected parachute and balloon.
