Hot Air Dirigible Airship (Patent No: 450815)

Inventor: McGee, John P.

Location: Calgary

Comments: N/A

Description: -CLAIMS-
Having regard to the foregoing disclosure, the patent of which this specification forms part confers, subject to the conditions prescribed in the Patent Act, 1935, the exclusive right, privilege and liberty of making, constructing, using and vending to others to be used, the invention as defined in claims submitted by the patentee as follows:-

1. In a hot air airship of dirigible type, a combustion engine manifold of gradually increasing diameter leading into an exhaust gas expansion chamber, a manifold cooling air. valve, a fan in said chamber for driving exhaust gases into the dirigible bag, a shaft for said fan driven off the airship engine crank shaft, an air valve to regulate the temperature in said chamber communicating with the outer atmosphere, an outlet valve for the passage of gases out from the upper portion of the bag, and an outlet valve for the passage of gases out of the lower portion of the bag.

2. In a semi-rigid airship, a conventional propeller-driving engine, a cone-shaped exhaust manifold on said engine, an air intake valve to controllably introduce air into said manifold, a gas expansion chamber communicating with the wide end of said manifold for conduction of exhaust gases to the bag of the airship, a fan in said chamber mounted on a shaft therein, means to rotate said shaft off the airship engine propeller shaft, a thrust; bearing to support said shaft, an end bearing within said chamber to support said shaft, a heat deflecting baffle plate to protect said thrust bearing, and remote controllable valves to control the outlet of air and gases from said bag.

3. In an airship of the lighter-than-air type having one or more propeller-driving engines, an engine exhaust manifold or manifolds of gradually increasing diameter from the leading end of the engine towards the rear end, a mixing chamber for the passage of engine exhaust gases as received from said manifold into the airship gas bag together with regulated cooling air, a blower fan in said mixing chamber, a shaft journaled into said chamber to drive said fan and driven by power take-off from the airship engine, controllable manifold cooling means by valve or valves, controllable mixing chamber cooling means by valve or valves, and controllable gas and. air outlet regulating valves in the airship bag and its envelope.
