Wire Gauge (Patent No: 748640)
Inventor: Minister of National Defence Location: Ottawa, ON Comments: N/A Description:
The embodiments of the invention in which an exclusive property or privilege is claimed are defined as follows:
1. A wire gauge for use in measuring fluid pressure waves comprising at least one erect ductile wire, and means for mounting said wire such that said wire will be permanently bent at a measureable angle after the passage of a pressure wave about the wire.
2. A wire gauge as in claim 1 wherein said means for mounting is comprised of a plurality of pieces forming a surface, said wire being held erect in a cantilevered position above said surface by clamping between said pieces.
3. A wire gauge as in claim 2 wherein said surface is approximately convex.
4. A wire gauge as in claims 1 or 2 wherein there area plurality of wires arranged in a straight line pattern.
5. A wire gauge as in claims 1, 2 or 3 wherein there are a plurality of wires arranged in a circular pattern.
6. A wire gauge as in claim 1 wherein said means for mounting is held on a stand.
7. The method of measuring the amplitude and direction of a. pressure wave to determine the energy yield of an explosion comprising positioning at least one ductile wire in an erect position, allowing said wire to bend about one end when impinged by a pressure wave and measuring the angle of bending of said wire, its direction of bending indicating the direction of origin of the wave.
