Claim.—1. A dummy cartridge, comprising a shell provided with the usual head having a central orifice, a base piece provided with a cap recess and central orifice, a plug fitting the recess provided with a central orifice and a sleeve-like portion extending inwardly through the orifice and having its orifice continuous with the orifice of the plug, a rod extending through the longitudinally aligned orifices of the plug in the base piece and of the head, a collar secured to the rod, and a spring extending between the collar and head and holding the collar against the inwardly projecting portion of the plug.

2. A marking rod, comprising an outer cylindrical casing adapted to fit the bore of the rifle barrel, a plug in the forward end having a central orifice, a rod extending through the orifice of the plug and terminating therein, a cylindrical member secured to the opposite or inner end of the rod and fitting the tubular casing and slidable thereon to form guiding means for the rod, and a spring surrounding the rod and extending between the sleeve and the plug.
