Ripper Tooth for Bucket Diggers and the Like (Patent No: 709558)

Inventor: Cities Service Research Athabasca Inc.

Location: Edmonton

Comments: N/A

Description:
The embodiments of the invention in which an exclusive property or privilege is claimed are defined as follows:

1. A ripper tooth for mounting on an excavating bucket, comprising in combination, a mounting body having a face portion for general alignment with a mounting wall of a bucket, a leading elongated insert member mounted on the leading end portion of said mounting body with its longitudinal axis extending on the opposite side of said mounting body from said face portion at an obtuse angle thereto whereby said insert axis extends generally normal to the face of the work being dug, and a reinforcing web for the insert extending from said mounting body generally transverse to said face portion and having a thickness approximately equal to the width of said elongated insert.

2. A ripper tooth for mounting on an excavating bucket and the like, comprising in combination, a mounting body for mounting on a wall of a bucket, said mounting body having a generally longitudinal axis extending therethrough disposed generally parallel to the wall of the bucket, a leading elongated relatively narrow in width insert member mounted on the leading end portion of said mounting body with its longitudinal axis therethrough. extending at an obtuse angle to the axis of said mounting body and having an extreme outward work engaging end lying in a plane extending generally transverse to the longitudinal axis of the insert whereby said insert axis extends generally normal to the face of the work being dug, and a reinforcing portion on said body backing up and supporting said elongated insert.

3. A ripper tooth for mounting on an excavating bucket, comprising in combination, a mounting body having a face portion for general alignment with a mounting wall of a bucket, means for mounting the body on the bucket, a leading elongated insert member mounted on the leading end portion of said mounting body with its longitudinal axis extending on the opposite side of said mounting body from said face portion at an obtuse angle thereto and an extreme leading end portion on the insert lying in a plane extending generally transverse to the longitudinal axis of the insert whereby said extreme end portion forms a wear surface generally parallel to the surface of the engaged work and a reinforcing web for the insert extending from said mounting body to the insert and having a thickness approximately equal to the width of said elongated insert.

4. A ripper tooth according to claim 4 wherein said longitudinal axis extends at an obtuse angle to said face at not less than about l20°.

5. A ripper tooth according to claim 3 wherein said means on the body for mounting the body on the bucket comprises a socket to be received by a shank on the bucket.

6. A ripper tooth according to claim 5 wherein said socket is formed by two spaced apart planar members secured to and extending generally transversely from the face portion on the same side of the face portion as extends said elongated insert, said spaced apart planar members having their outer leading edges converging toward said face portion and a plate member joining with said last mentioned outer leading edges.

7. A ripper tooth according to claim 6 wherein said reinforcing web member for said insert has its end opposite to said end supporting said elongated insert attached to said plate member of said socket.

8. A ripper tooth for mounting on an excavating bucket, comprising in combination, a mounting body having a generally planar face portion defining one side thereof and extending for general alignment with a mounting wall of a bucket, means for mounting said body on a bucket, a leading elongated insert member having an end thereof mounted on the end portion of said face portion remote from the mounting means for the body and having its longitudinal axis therethrough extending at an obtuse angle from said face portion and forward of said mounting body, said face portion having end edges adjacent said elongated insert converging toward said end of the insert and reinforcing means attached to the rear of said insert and to said face portion and mounting body, said mounting means mounting said tooth on said bucket to present the longitudinal axis through said insert generally normal to the surface of the work being dug.

9. A ripper tooth for mounting on an excavating bucket, comprising in combination, a mounting body having a leading end portion and mounting means mounting the tooth on a wall of a bucket with the elongated axis through the body lying generally parallel to the wall of the bucket, a leading elongated insert member having an end portion mounted on the leading end portion of the mounting body and having the elongated axis through the insert extending at an obtuse angle with the elongated axis through the mounting body and lying in a plane extending generally normal to the mounting wall portion of the bucket, said mounting body having support means attached to the rear of the insert whereby the elongated axis of the insert extends in working position generally normal to the face of the work.

10. A ripper tooth according to claim 9 wherein the extreme outward other end of the insert extends as a wear surface generally normal to the elongated axis of the insert.

11. A ripper tooth according to claim 9 wherein said support means attached to the rear of the insert is of a thickness approximately the transverse width of the insert and lies in a general plane containing the elongated axis through the mounting body and the elongated axis through the insert member.

12. A ripper tooth for mounting on an excavating bucket, comprising in combination, a mounting body having a face portion for general alignment with a mounting wall of a bucket, a leading elongated insert member mounted on the
leading end portion of said mounting body with its longitudinal axis extending on the opposite side of said mounting body from said face portion at an obtuse angle thereto whereby said insert axis extends generally normal to the face of the work being dug, and a reinforcing web for the insert extending from said mounting body generally transverse to said face portion and having a thickness approximately equal to the width of said elongated insert and having an exposed wear edge behind the insert having a portion thereof extending in spaced relation and generally parallel to said face portion of the body.

13. A ripper tooth for mounting on an excavating bucket, comprising in combination, a mounting body having a generally planar face portion defining one side thereof and extending for general alignment with a mounting wall of a bucket, means for mounting said body on a bucket, a leading elongated insert member having an end thereof mounted on the end portion of said face portion remote from the mounting means for the body and having its longitudinal axis therethrough extending at an obtuse angle from said face portion and forward of said mounting body, said face portion having end edges adjacent said elongated insert converging toward said end of the insert and reinforcing means attached to the rear of said insert and to said insert and to said face portion and mounting body, said mounting means mounting said tooth on said bucket to present the longitudinal axis through said insert generally normal to the surface of the work being dug, said face portion having a wear resistant hardened face piece mounted on said face portion adjacent said insert.
