A self propelled vehicle for carrying heavy loads along public highways or the like includes an elongated main frame which is adapted to support a load thereon. A set of drive wheels is secured adjacent rearwardly disposed portions of said main frame for propelling said vehicle. A set of steerable wheels is connected to said main frame adjacent the front end of said vehicle for effecting directional control of the latter. An extensible frame portion is connected to said main frame and is adapted to be projected outwardly from the rear portions of said main frame or is retracted inwardly thereof in a direction parallel to the longitudinal dimension of said main frame. A further set of load bearing wheels is secured to said extensible frame such that said further set of wheels is brought nearer to or further away from said vehicle drive wheels as said extensible frame portion is moved relative to said main frame whereby to provide a desired spacing between the load bearing wheels of the vehicle.
